06 Dec 11 Performance: Peacekeeper crowns Google Chrome

With the launch of a new version of Peacekeeper, Futuremark has taken a look at all current browsers and believes Google Chrome to be the fastest, ahead of Opera who is slowly catching up.

Peacekeeper-FuturemarkFinnish company Futuremark has published a new version of Peacekeeper, with this free tool evaluating the performance of Web browsers. The latest version also looks at the HTML5 standards and can be used from any connected device. This means that it is not only of interest to PC users, but also those running Mac’s, smartphones and tablets.

Futuremark states that Peacekeeper measures a browsers performance via their capacity to treat often used JavaScript functions. The evaluation takes into account rendering tests, HTML5 (video, canvas, Web Worker…), DOM and syntax analysis… although it doesn’t look at security or W3C conformity.

The developer indicates that since March 2009, close to 2.6 million* results have been submitted with 3 140 different browser versions tested. The most popular browser for Peacekeeper users was Firefox (30% of all results).

Futuremark noticed that when Peacekeeper was launched, Safari was the fastest browser, although today it is the slowest (Windows and Mac OS). The browser that has made the most progress is Internet Explorer. As for the fastest browser, this award has been given to Google Chrome, although Futuremark points out that Opera is quickly catching up. As an indication, the following results have been handed down.

PC running Windows with an Intel Core i7-2600K processor:

  • Chrome 15.0.874.121: Peacekeeper score – 4720
  • Opera 11.52: 4318
  • Firefox 8.0.1: 2554
  • Internet Explorer 9.0: 2471
