15 Apr 12 Android Market Share Doubles In China, Even Symbian Is Ahead Of iOS

Man those Chinese sure love the Android operating system. We knew in the back of our minds that Android was a super hit in China however new research from Analysis International says that the market share for our favorite operating system has doubled year over year.

In 2011 Android accounted for 33.6% of the smartphone market share in China. In 2012 Android shot up to 68.4%. While this echos a theme from across the world, China is definitely one of the hottest spots for Android. These numbers are fueled by handsets and tablets manufactured by the usual OEM’s that we re familiar with along with some of the Chinese companies that we aren’t so familiar with.

Huawei and ZTE have a huge market share in their native China and as we know they have released quite a few Android devices overseas. HTC, Motorola, Samsung and LG also have a great presence in China, and let us not forget Sony Ericsson who has several Xperia models on China’s three biggest carriers China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom. In fact we just learned this morning that HTC is releasing three new “Desire” handsets in China shortly.

If you’re wondering how iOS fairs in China, this latest research actually shows Symbian out in front of Apple’s iOS platform with 18.7%. The iPhone is just becoming available in China however Android and Symbian are so entrenched in China it will be hard for iOS to disrupt the ecosystem there.

The study suggests that the wide variety of Android devices and price points have helped fuel the operating systems growth in China.
