24 May 12 Get the Galaxy S III experience on your S II right now

This is what you get when one of the hottest Android phones of yesteryear tries on its kid’s new clothes.

Interest in Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S III is so far out of this world it’s forcing me to pull out all my most revolting puns.

The flagship
Android phone has already smashed preorder records in the U.K., and is causing global pangs of jealousy today with word that it’s apparently gone on sale early in Dubai.

If you just can’t wait any longer, or your personal jet is in the shop and you can’t make the trip to the UAE right away, there’s still a way to get your hands on the Galaxy S III experience. Kind of.

Thanks to Smando over at the xda developers forum, Galaxy S II users can now port the launcher from the new S III onto their phone. If you want a taste of the latest and greatest of Samsung’s Touchwiz, you can find download links on the original forum post. You can choose from a 4×5 layout for the launcher or give 5×5 a try, although you may run into some force-closes with certain 4×4 widgets.

The port only works on Samsung-based ROMs, though, so if you’re running AOSP, you may be out of luck.

Of course, you won’t get any of the sweetness of the Galaxy S III’s improved specs with the port, but it’s a nice glimpse into what life in a new Galaxy far far a few weeks away could be like.
