30 Diciembre 12 Google Chrome bloquea temporalmente Twitpic.com por el riesgo de malware

Google has blocked access to Twitpic.com, a popular photo sharing tool for Twitter, after identifying it as a malware risk. Some users are also complaining that Twitter’s own t.co URL shortener service is also broken at the moment but we are not sure if the two are incidents are linked in any manner.

Curiosamente, pics posted via Twitpic appear in the expanded mode on Twitter when viewed on Google Chrome. We should hopefully get an update soon on the situation. It is unlikely for the block to remain for long and in all probability the affected services are working it with Google as we file this post.

ACTUALIZACIÓN: Twitpic denies there is anything wrong with its service to invoke the malware notice and is trying to contact Google.

29 Diciembre 12 Google Chrome Browser se restringe la Extensiones

The Windows version of Google Chrome is one of the most widely used browsers. And Google is now tightening restrictions on browser extensions that install themselves without full notification to users.

This may be frustrating for companies that bundle browser extensions with their standard user download packages. But it will make the Chrome browser more secure and set a positive seguridad example for browser extensions generally. And for the IT community at midsize firms, this is a welcome development.

Browser extensions have become an all too popular vector for malware exploits. This makes better protection of browsers good news for all usersnot just individuals using a browser to surf the Internet, but companies that depend on the open Web to reach out to customers.

Google ChromeAsk Before Installing

As Seth Rosenblatt reports at CNET, Google Chrome for Windows will now require most browser extensions to get explicit user acknowledgment and permission before the extension can be installed. Two new features in Chrome 25 will enforce the new rules.

The only extensions exempt from the new requirement are those that come directly from the Chrome store, and are thus under the Google aegis.

According to Peter Ludwig, Chrome product manager, the previous policy of allowing silent installation of third-party extensions had beenwidely abusedto install extensionswithout proper acknowledgement from users.Henceforth, third-party extensions will be disabled by default. A notification box will say that an extension has been installed and give the user the option of enabling it.

Another feature in Chrome 25 will make this protective functionality retroactive. Existing third-party extensions will be disabled, with a prompt allowing users to re-enable them.

In Line With Mozilla

The new protective functionality brings Chrome into line with Mozilla Firefox, which already requires notification by third-party add-ons. The move may be unwelcome by some companies and other organizations that have incorporated browser extensions in their uploads. But comments on the CNET piece were strongly supportive of the move.

IT professionals at midsize firms have a strong stake in measures that strengthen browser security. Browsers are usersdoors to the open Web, an environment that allows midsize firms to compete on an even playing field.

The mobility era is already posing a challenge to the open Web, as app-ification and walled gardens make the full Web harder to reach. The continued availability of safe, secure browsers is a key protection against the fragmentation of the Web and dominance by large vendors. This makes the latest Chrome for Windows protections a very good move for midsize firms.

26 Diciembre 12 Intel para tomar en 5S iPhone, Galaxy S IV con la plataforma Smartphone Nuevo

Intel (NASDAQ:

to take place at the end of February.

If this report is accurate, Intel’s announcement will come
around the same time that Samsung is expected to unveil the
Galaxy S IV. The South Korean manufacturer was expected to
introduce the new phone a little sooner, but Samsung quashed that
rumor when it jumped ahead and unveiled the
Galaxy Grand

semana pasada. The Grand runs the latest version of Google (NASDAQ:

) Android and includes a five-inch display. Many speculate that
the Galaxy S IV will feature a screen that is even bigger, aunque
not as big as the Galaxy Note 2, which contains a 5.5-inch

Pro, Mac Mini and other computersis rumored to be developing
an iPhone upgrade for an early spring 2013 liberar. El dispositivo,
which many suspect will be called the iPhone 5S, could be
unveiled in March.

Intel has had its eye on the smartphone market for some time.
The company is famous for manufacturing the Pentium, Celeron,
Core Duo and Core i7 brands, which have helped Intel to become
the world’s largest chipmaker.

Despite its size and massive revenue (aproximadamente
$50 millones de dólares

annually), Intel is losing ground. It has learned that PCs
desktops, notebooks and other formsmay not be the future. Si
Intel is to maintain its spot at the top, it must build a
successful platform for the devices that stand to replace PCs:
teléfonos inteligentes y tabletas.

Intel attempted to cash in on the mobile market when it
developed Medfield, a mobile platform used by Motorola, Lenovo
and a handful of other manufacturers. Thus far, none of the
Medfield-powered smartphones have produced a runaway success
historia. Instead of hearing more about Motorola’s RAZR I, los inversores
have been bombarded with reports of

y el
surprising revelation

that the Medfield X86 chips did not initially support 4G LTE. La

These results could be very troubling to smartphone makers

Shares of Intel are down nearly 16 percent year-to-date.

24 Diciembre 12 Google bloquea la instalación silenciosa extensión de Chrome

Blocking sideload extensions with Chrome 25

Google tiene anunciado that when Google Chrome 25 for Windows arrives, attempts by third party applications to silently install extensions will now trigger a dialog window to be displayed and, until the user confirms the extension is legitimate, the extension will remain disabled. The company says the technique, known as sideloading extensions, was originally designed to make it easier for applications to add appropriate extensions to Chrome by modifying the registry when being installed.

The feature has, sin embargo, beenwidely abused by third partiessay the company. The abuse of the extension or add-on system is nothing new; over a year ago Firefox 8 presentó similar features that slowed the install of add-ons, Mozilla’s version of extensions. Another change in Chrome 25 which is similar to Firefox’s solution is the disabling of all previously installed third-party extensions. The idea behind this change is to ensure that users audit their installed extensions and are aware of what has already been added to their browser’s configuration.

Google recommends that Windows developers use their instalación de línea mechanism for adding extensions in the future. This allows extensions to be served from Google’s Chrome Web Store in the background while appearing to be installed from the extension developer’s web site.

20 Diciembre 12 MxHero’s Gmail Chrome extension aims to deliver us from the email Dark Ages

While most tools of the digital communication age continue to evolve, for some reason email has been curiously (and tragically) stuck in the past. Online email clients have replaced clunky desktop software, and spam filters have vastly improved, but at its core, email today functions much like it did in the ’90s.

MxHero, a New York City-based startup (and recent graduate from Entrepreneurs Roundtable Accelerator), hopes to save us from the archaic limitations of email with a universal platform that can work across any email provider.

Today the company is launching a Google Chrome extension that will give any Gmail user a taste of its platform, including the ability to send a self-destructing email, notifications of when recipients access attachments, and the ability to send batch personalized emails. The latter feature is particularly intriguing, because it solves the ugly blind carbon copy hack for sending batch messages without sharing all of the recipients (es decir, putting your recipients in the “BCC” field and your own address in the “To” field.)

While the extension is MxHero’s first direct-to-consumer offering, the company’s technology has already been implemented by the likes of Zimbra, Caja, and VMWare. MxHero’s technology can be implemented as both a cloud service and an on-site service (which should make stodgy IT departments happy). It also works across any email platform.

MxHero’s full suite of plugins includes the ability to control the delivery times of certain types of email (por ejemplo, all of your newsletters can land after the work day ends), a simple method for sending large attachments (despite your email provider’s limitations), and the ability to be notified if a recipient doesn’t respond to your email in time. These are seemingly simple additions, but they’ve been difficult to implement so far in decades-old email standards.

Alex Panagides, MxHero’s founder and chief executive, tried to push forward the potential of web apps with his previous firm, Inova. He’s also committed to maintaining the open nature of email standards — MxHero’s technology is open source, and it has made an API available for developers (though it’s not fully documented yet).

I’ve been testing out the Chrome extension for the past week, and I can confirm that all of the plugins work as advertised. After a short setup period (which simply involves granting the MxHero extension access to your Gmail account), you’ll see two new buttons when you’re composing a Gmail message. To use one of the extension’s features, simply choose it from the “Apps” button and then click the MxHero “Send” button (not the standard Gmail send button).

To add new features to email, the company takes some creative routes. Por ejemplo, the self-destructing email feature turns your message into an image, which is what the recipient actually sees. Once the image has been viewed once, it is removed from MxHero’s server. A shady recipient can still take a screenshot of the message, but the feature still adds a helpful layer of security.

MxHero is about halfway through raising a $900,000 seed round, Panagides tells me.
