Tar Heels start 3-0

The Newport-Mesa Tar Heels fifth-grade boys’ All-Net team has opened the season on a three-game winning streak with wins over Villa Park, 67-9, RSM PD, 41-37, and the Encinitas Energy, 54-21.

The Tar Heels, who are coached by Scott Stucki and Todd Bashore, had balance in the front and backcourt, proving tough for the early-season opposition to match up with.

Guards John Humphreys and Jack Rettig are off to a hot start, averaging 13 points, 3.6 assists and 6.6 and 5.3 steal a game, respectively. Forwards Luke Bashore (6.6 points and seven rebounds a game) and Clay Liolios (five points and 7.6 rebounds a game) have been scoring and rebounding forces three games into the year.

Cade Overfelt has cemented himself as Newport-Mesa’s sixth man, averaging nine points off the bench. Nic Ayala also boasts a three-to-one turnover ratio for the Tar Heels, who have also got boosts on the defensive end from Luke Hatfield, Haig Mavusi, Troy Smith and hope to get Jack McKenna back from an injury soon.
