ODESSA- When asked what words come to mind during the Tejano Super Car Show, Freddy Salazar sums it all up with one. He says, “Chrome. Lots of chrome.”

Salazar’s been working on cars since he was a teen. This year, he’s stepping it up a notch. “I have a 1966 Chevrolet Impala. This is my first year of actually being a participant,” Salazar said.

Saturday and Sunday will mark the 40th anniversary of the Car Show at the Ector County Coliseum. It’s major low rider event and likely one of the biggest in the nation.

“We’ve got people from Colorado, Arizona, Florida, New York and Chicago,” organizer, Rick Carrera, said.

Thousands of tickets have been sold which is helping drive up the local economy.

“It brings a lot of people, especially to the hotels and restaurants. So, it’s going to bring a lot of money to the economy, especially the way the economy is right now,” Visitor, Ismael Levario, said.

Folks spent the day browsing through rows of decked-out rides.

“It’s a lot of detail. It takes a lot of time to put this stuff together. There’s a lot of work that goes into the cars and detail and paint jobs. It takes a lot of time and dedication,” Levario said.

These cars and trucks are all completely unique, from the glitter to the paint to the decals. It’s a form of art unlike any other.

Levario adds, “Everything in this truck is personal. Every owner adds his own special touch to the truck.”

It’s a pastime that helps these car lovers escape the daily grind.

Salazar says, “[I do it] for the enjoyment I get out of building them and the satisfaction of accomplishing something and the thrill and joy of other people enjoying what you’ve done.”
