Today Google is launching its Google Play Magazines service here in the UK. Android users will be able to take advantage of the new digital magazine service via a dedicated app, available now on the official Google Play Store.
The store has been stocked with more than 100 popular magazines, with single issue and subscription pricing models available. Once you’ve installed or updated the Play Magazines app, you’ll find a brand new purple magazines section listed in the main Play Store app. From here you’ll be able to browse, purchase and review publications.
A selection of 30-day free trials are available in order to whet your appetite a little and give you a taste of the digital magazine experience, but you’ll have to purchase a monthly or yearly subscription in order to take advantage of the offer. The terms state that Google will only begin charging you once the 30-day trial period has expired, so bear that in mind if you’re just casually trying out the new magazine experience.
There are many publication available including the likes of GQ, Esquire, Wired, Vogue, .net, Total Film, Computer Arts, Elle and even VW Camper Bus! Rather than me listing them all, go check them out for yourselves here.
With Christmas fast approaching, Play Magazines could not have arrived at a better time. Android tablet sales have been brisk this holiday season, and Google’s own Nexus line of tablets are selling like hot cakes. When freshly unwrapped Android tablets are switched on this Christmas morning, digital magazines will be there, ready to be consumed on the devices they were designed for. Unlike last Christmas.
Personally, I’m looking forward to trying some publications on a Nexus 10 tablet. Have you tried the new magazines in the Play store, or do you prefer the idea of a hard copy over its digital alternative?
