17 Dec 12 Nexus 4 Shortage Problems Due To “Scarce And Erratic” Supply From LG …

The Google Nexus 4 has been a very popular device – maybe too popular, with supplies of the handset scarce since its initial launch, and Google having to push back anticipated delivery windows for even those few customers who managed to buy one before Google stopped accepting new orders. Google’s UK and Ireland managing director Dan Cobley finally ascribed some blame in the situation, taking to Google+ to smooth things over with customers disappointed in the progress of their Nexus 4 orders.

“Dear all, I know that what you are going through is unacceptable and we are all working through the nights and weekends to resolve this issue,” he wrote in a reply to an original post about Google Zeitgeist. “Supplies from the manufacturer are scarce and erratic, and our communication has been flawed.”

Cobley’s statement was far from a knee-jerk reaction; he replied many times that he was looking into the issue in order to be able to share more information before answering many complaints in the thread about delivery times and Nexus 4 availability before providing that answer. It’s the closest we’ve come to seeing anyone with actual knowledge of the situation explain why Google has been unable to release the smartphone in anything but small batches. I’ve theorized in the past that LG might be holding things up, since the Nexus 4 is essentially the same on the inside as the LG Optimus G, its flagship device and the one it would likely favor if there was any question of limited component or assembly supply.

Cobley then went on to tell commenters that orders originally in the 3-5 day shipping estimate range were being pushed through, and to expect a credit refunded to their play account for shipping charges. Orders with pre-Christmas shipping estimates were also said to be going through shortly.

The Nexus 4 is a hot commodity, as you can see from the abundance of marked up handsets being resold by those lucky enough to have them on sites like Craigslist. The Nexus 4 also achieved “high demand” status on eBay, meaning that it was getting enough listings that eBay felt it necessary to set up sales restrictions to help prevent and minimize fraud.

16 Dec 12 Nexus 4 enhanced video software mod & Jelly Bean ROM » Phone Reviews

The Google Nexus 4 made by LG has been more successful than anybody could have imagined and one of the reasons for its success was that being a Nexus device it offers a pure vanilla Android experience, great for those who like to customize their phones. It will also be one of the first in line to receive future Android operating system updates. Today we have news of a software mod that will enhance video recording and more news about a LiquidSmooth Jelly Bean ROM.

Demand for the Nexus 4 is still outstripping supply but for those fortunate enough to have already got their hands on one it offers plenty of opportunities for tweaking and the use of custom ROMs. Firstly one of the ingenious hackers/developers over at XDA, mohit1234, has come up with a mod that will gift significant advances to the Nexus 4’s video capture capabilities with a clearer picture and also less noise than with the default setting.

The software mod will increase the default bitrate of 12mbps to 20mbps, now that’s some improvement. You will require a Nexus 4 that has been rooted and has its bootloader unlocked and access to the system partition via a root file manager app. The only downside is that your new video files will be larger in size, something to bear in mind when considering the rather limited storage on the Nexus 4, a good point made by Phandroid. If you want to check this out then head to this XDA link where you will find full instructions and the dev responsible has also included a zip file for flashing.

Please remember to do a backup of your data, apps and settings before you begin. At this point we’ll give you our usual caution that at Phones Review we never recommend tampering with your device and if you choose to do so it is entirely your own responsibility and at your own risk if something goes wrong. However, we know that many of our readers, and particularly Nexus device owners, enjoy this aspect of owning a smartphone and so like to bring you the latest information.

We also have news of a new LiquidSmooth Jelly Bean 4.2.1 ROM for the Nexus 4, aimed at making your device performance smooth, stable and highly customizable. This custom ROM comes from yet another XDA developer, tspderek, and your Nexus 4 will need to have ClockworkMod recovery installed and have an unlocked bootloader. You can find the LiquidSmooth Jelly Bean ROM download at this XDA link and you can find out much more as well as see full instructions and installation guide at Android Soul here. Once more we’ll remind you that if you choose to use this then it is entirely your responsibility as in our earlier caution.

We have a feeling that a lot of Nexus 4 owners may be entertained this weekend modding their devices. We’re always interested to hear from our readers so let us know of your Nexus 4 experiences. Will you try out either of the above methods? If so we’d like to hear if it all went smoothly for you and what you think of the finished results? Let us know by sending your comments.

Now the 16GB Nexus 4 is Sold Out, Too

by | December 15, 2012
+ Comment

The holiday spirit seems to have a firm grip on Nexus 4 fans, as the device (this time the 16GB version) is currently out of stock on Google’s Play store. Well, you can always get an Optimus G? Maybe?

Google’s latest Nexus device, manufactured by LG, has been a very hard item to come by ever since it was launched in November. It hasn’t been the smoothest of product roll outs we’ve ever seen, either, with delayed shipments, sell outs, and everything you can imagine tormenting availability.

Demand is obviously high, which has been reflected by the 8GB version being particularly scarce. But I suppose that’s a good problem for Google to have. Of course, t’s unfortunate for customers who wanted to gift the device this holiday season.

With just a few weeks left of 2012, it’s looking likely that the device will be out of stock until next year. Google hasn’t hinted at when more Nexus 4 units will be available, so for now customers will just need to wait around with bated breath.

15 Dec 12 Nexus 4 Google Play stock exhausted again » Phone Reviews

It has been around a month now since Google treated the Android world to some new Nexus branded hardware that included the hugely popular Nexus 4 smartphone manufactured by LG. The popularity of the handset with its competitive pricing and high end specs has seen the device becoming hard to get hold of from certain channels, and especially Google Play. It now seems that stock via this method has been exhausted again with no word when it will be available.

As soon as Google first launched the Nexus 4 onto the Google Play Store both storage versions of the device quickly sold out, and when pre-orders then started again for the device consumers were left with rather long wait times for their handset to arrive.

Now at the time of writing both the 8GB and 16GB versions of the Nexus 4 have sold out in the US and UK Google Play Stores. The 8GB model was the first to sell out recently but has now been joined by the 16GB model and just before this the shipping time for the device was showing up to a nine week wait time.

LG has spoken about the stock shortages of the Nexus 4 recently and basically said it was down to the huge demand, but those desperate to get hold of the device can decide to purchase it from a number of carriers or third party retailers.

Trouble is though this is a much more expensive option as for instance the US Amazon online store has the 8GB nexus 4 listed at a massive $559.99, which compares to $299 via Google Play when there is stock. OK Google will charge you for delivery of your handset but that’s a big difference in price for the same product.

For those of you that were lucky enough to recently get an order accepted by Google for the Nexus 4 it could be almost February before you even see your device. For UK consumers the handset is now available via carrier Three, which first revealed some pricing for the handset last month, but at the time of writing the only option available is getting the device on the One Plan over two years at £35 per month, and a £29 up front cost for the 16GB model.

If stock issues are not quickly resolved many potential buyers of the Nexus 4 may look elsewhere, as next month we have the CES event in Las Vegas that is followed in February by the Mobile World Congress, and we are likely to see a whole host of desirable new hardware being announced.

Have you managed to get hold of the Nexus 4 via Google Play?
