30 Dec 12 Touch Detective Now Live At Google Play

One of the best adventure games over at the Nintendo DS has just made its way to the Android platform. Touch Detective uses a point and click approach that will remind you of vintage PC adventure games. This time though you won’t be using your mouse but instead use the touch screen of your device.

touch detective

The game itself is free to download and has a 206 MB file size. There are currently four chapters available with the frist one free to play. You will have to purchase the other chapters if you would like to continue playing. Each chapter costs $4 or you could buy the remaining three chapters at once for $9.

Touch Detective revolves around, Mackenzie, a budding female detective who has just inherited her father’s detective agency. Accompanying her in this adventure is the ever loyal butler Cromwell who encourages her and builds handy contraptions. Her goal is to make it to the Great Detective Society but in order to do so she must be able to solve enough cases.

There are lots of mysteries that need to be solved and to do so you have to travel to several locations. You will need to touch items and talk to characters to gather clues. The graphics is quite fresh while the controls are very easy.

One complaint we have about this game is the time you have to spend in between games. The dialogue is just way too long making you just want to tap away to speed up things.

If you haven’t tried this type of game before then I suggest you download it. The first chapter is free and entertaining enough. If you want to continue playing then you can then decide to purchase the next chapters.

This isn’t a game you would want to play when you have a 5 minute break. If you have the time and you want to immerse yourself in mystery then you’ll definitely enjoy playing Touch Detective.

26 Dec 12 Ant Raid Now Live At Google Play

Popular mobile game developer Herocraft has just released Ant Raid for the Android platform which you can now download over at Google Play for $0.99.  This title became one of the biggest strategy games when it was released over at the iOS platform. Now, Android users can experience this amazing title in their devices.

ant raid

Ant Raid puts you in control of an ant colony. You will be tasked to advance the colony while dealing with the various predators that threaten your existence. The game is a combination of both tower defense and arcade twitch. One thing that makes this at par with all of the other excellent mobile titles is that it has a story involved which you will get to see at the beginning. The characters are adorable while the graphics are just so wonderfully created.

There are various objectives that you have to accomplish for each game level depending on the scenario. This in my opinion is one way to make it more fun and entertaining, we don’t want any repetitive boring tasks right?

Defeating an enemy entails you to grab some ants and sending them to your enemy. The bigger your enemy the more ants you have to send their way. Some of the enemies include snails which knock down your ants as soon as they’re done and worms which are good at shaking your troops.

You will also have to understand the color of your enemies. Enemies that are blue in color usually have very high defensive skills which will take them longer to kill. Red enemies are very aggressive and can move quickly. The good thing about this is that if you defeat your enemies your ants get to absorb their abilities.

The story mode takes up to 60 levels to finish. Once you have finished those levels you can unlock 40 challenge levels that has 4 levels of difficulty.

Once you have finished the standard game mode there’s the endless mode where you can challenge up to four friends.

If you are looking for a fun and exciting strategy game to play on your Android device then don’t miss out on this title.

26 Dec 12 Final Fantasy Dimensions Now Live At Google Play

One of the most loved RPG titles in the world is the Final Fantasy franchise. Its engrossing storyline, lovable characters and unique gameplay combine to bring everyone a memorable gaming experience. Fans of this series will be able to enjoy playing this game on their Android device now that Final Fantasy Dimensions has been released. The game can now be downloaded over at Google Play for $20.

final fantasy dimension

Most people might say that the price is a bit too steep compared to the average selling price of most games at Google Play however it’s definitely worth it. It has a compelling storyline with graphics that is both retro and modern looking. The characters are great and the menu system is easy to understand. It’s definitely going to bring you countless hours of fun.

This old school game was first available over at the iOS platform last August but now is available for Android. If you have played RPG games on the SNES then you will be familiar with the style that this title brings. It is actually a port of a game which was released for mobile devices only in Japan called Final Fantasy Legends: Hikari to Yami no Senshi.

Final Fantasy Dimensions centers on two warrior groups, one focused on light while the other focused on darkness. You will be able to control both groups depending on the phase you are in the game. Just like most games in this genre it follows a turn-based combat system.

You will be able to interact with various non-playable characters, acquire items and defeat enemies. Characters have the ability to increase their levels and also change their job types which makes them gain additional skills.

One thing that bugged me though is the random battles that occur when you are exploring the game. While this might be good for leveling up your character it’s a pain when your character is in a hurry.

As far as the control system goes you are presented with three different configurations. All of these make use of a virtual D-Pad though.

If you are a fan of the final Fantasy series then don’t miss out on this epic title.

24 Dec 12 Anomaly: Korea Now Live At Google Play

One of my favorite Android games is Anomaly: Warzone Earth which is a unique strategy game designed by 11 Bit Studios. I was excited to find out that a sequel to this popular game has been released over at Google Play called Anomaly: Korea. Knowing that its predecessor set a high standard in gaming how does this sequel stack up against it?

Anomaly-Korea

Anomaly: Korea is not your usual tower defense game. Instead of you playing the part of the defender you will become the attacker. The premise of the game is that aliens have invaded the Korean peninsula and it is up to you to get rid of them. You will have various vehicles and weapons at your disposal to aid you in your task. You will have five abilities which you can use namely Boost, Repair, Smoke, Decoy and Airstrike as well as six different units with different capabilities.

You will play the part as the leader of the convoy as you decide on the route it is going to take. You will have to carefully decide on the route you take and make sure that your convoy takes in as little damage as possible. The good news to this is that you can alter your route while you are already travelling.

The controls are pretty much easy and all you have to do is tap on your screen. You can swipe on the screen as well to get a good view of the map and use pinch to zoom to get a closer view.

This sequel is pretty much similar to Anomaly: Warzone Earth however its added Boost feature spices things up by dealing more damage to the defenders. The graphics of Anomaly: Korea is better and comes with more visual effects. One thing unique to this sequel is its Art of War Mode which provides you with six additional levels that are quite challenging.

Anomaly Korea can now be downloaded over at Google Play for $2.99. It comes with a 294 MB file size so it might take a while for you to download. I suggest downloading it over a Wi-Fi connection so as not to incur any data charges from your mobile network.

23 Dec 12 Google Play now allows Developers to Localize their Promotional Graphics

Google Play, the world’s largest app-store, offers developers the gateway to reach millions of Android users around the world. When Google’s revolutionary mobile OS debuted in market, the Google Play was supported only across a number of countries. In fact, until the start of 2011, it didn’t cover more than 30 countries.

However, in the last year-or-two, the scenario has changed pleasantly for Android. It now encircles over 130 countries across the world, and supports 49 international languages. Shockingly enough, more than 2/3rd of the total app revenue comes from countries other than U.S. The statistics can be accredited to Google’s increased support for paid-apps in various countries, with the recent additions being- Israel, Mexico, the Czech Republic, Poland, Brazil and Russia.

Google realizes how important it is for developers to reach their target audience. There are more than 700,000 apps on Play Store, and there are more than a billion people using the Android platform. Though it’s important to get apps into spotlight, it’s also important that app is understandable and interpretable the multi-lingual audience.

For instance, a developer might rely on the translated text description for his app into numerous languages supported by Google Play, but that alone is not enough to grab more users as people are still not able to understand the working of the app in the video. Until now, there was no way he could customize the videos and images for a particular set of people. If the promotional video is in English, a French guy, who does not understand English, would have no way of interpreting the essence of the video. While he can still see the working of the app, he cannot fully understand what it does.local_graphics

Keeping this in mind, Google now allows developers to add localized images and video links, just like they added localized text descriptions. Besides showing translated text, a localized graphic feature would also allow you to add local flavor to your app — for instance, changing its theme to reflect local holidays.

… “If a picture says a thousand words, how many words can a motion picture say?”

Localized images, and video links make it easy for user to interpret the purpose of the app. While a user could always read the description, the first thing that attracts you about the app is the look-and-the-feel. If the user is easily familiarized with the app through the localized interpretation, the likeliness of his/her buying the app increases greatly.

Hence, localized images and videos would help the developers fetch even more downloads. With localized videos, you can now add appropriate voiceover and text and also show app running in the background.

Before, upload the localized video, do make sure you upload the video in various different sizes. Also, as many people would be buying new tablets for their holidays, and loading them with lots of apps, make sure you include localized tablet screenshots to show off your various tablet layouts.

To add the localized graphics and videos to your app, you would need to use the Google Play Developer Console Preview. Please note that once you publish you app using the newer console, you won’t be able to publish the app using the older version. Hence, developers who are using the APK Expansion Files would now be compelled to use this feature. Once you’ve saved and published your application using the new console, automated translations would become available to all Android users.

We think this is an amazing move from Google. Perhaps, this move could bring Google a little closer to the humungous amount of revenue Apple earns from its App Store. Just a little bit closer, though.

16 Feb 12 Google intros Chrome in beta for Android

Google has rolled out the Chrome for Android Beta to bring features and apps of Chrome to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich phones or tablets.

With Chrome for Android, users can scroll through Web pages as quickly as they can flick with their fingers. When searching, the top search results are loaded in the background as a user types so pages appear instantly. Like in the desktop version, both search and navigation can be done from the Chrome omnibox.

Google said Chrome for Android was designed from the ground up for mobile devices.

“We re-imagined tabs so they fit just as naturally on a small-screen phone as they do on a larger screen tablet. You can flip or swipe between an unlimited number of tabs using intuitive gestures, as if you’re holding a deck of cards in the palm of your hands, each one a new window to the Web,” the company said.

Google said one of the biggest pains of mobile browsing is selecting the correct link out of several on a small-screen device. Link Preview, it said, does away with hunting and pecking for links on a Web page by automatically zooming in on links to make selecting the precise one easier.

“And as with Chrome on desktop, we built Chrome for Android with privacy in mind from the beginning, including incognito mode for private browsing and fine-grained privacy options (tap menu icon, ‘Settings,’ and then ‘Privacy’),” the company said.

In sum, Chrome on Android allows the following:

• View open tabs: Access the tabs you left open on your computer (also signed into Chrome)—picking up exactly where you left off.

• Get smarter suggestions: If you visit a site often on your computer, you’ll also get an auto-complete suggestion for it on your mobile device, so you can spend less time typing.

• Sync bookmarks: Conveniently access your favorite sites no matter where you are or which device you’re using.

Chrome is now available in Beta from Android Market, in select countries and languages for phones and tablets with Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Google said it “looking forward to working closely with the developer community to create a better Web on a platform that defines mobile.”

09 Dec 11 Google Chrome’s Innovation

Google Chromes InnovationWhile the statistics are debated, apparently Google’s Chrome browser has overtaken Firefox for the number two spot in two short years and now sits behind Internet Explorer. Why has this happened?

Two years ago Firefox was cruising. Their value proposition was that of reliability and security. They created a browser that never crashed and protected users. Two attributes people didn’t associate with Internet Explorer because of it’s propensity for getting exploited by hackers and malware.

They also pioneered the ability to personalize the browser by letting developers create extensions that added more functionality to the browsers. Mozilla took advantage of this and became the browser of choice for techies and internet enthusiasts. But this focus on reliability, security and personalization, while great, made them blind to an emerging dimension: speed.

Google focused its efforts on making a browser that was not just reliable and secure, but also very very fast. It even touted that it was faster than lighting, and it is.

Well guess what?

The same thing that happened to Internet Explorer has happened to Firefox. It stopped innovating in the dimensions that matter to people. And now they’ve been playing catch up to Chrome ever since.

How did this happen?

People are spending more and more time on the web, interacting with applications that require more resources and look just like desktop applications. This requires speed. Because of its place in the tech industry, its vision and its business model; Google understood this. And acted accordingly. It’s also important to mention that Google is disruptive by nature, so it’s not that surprising to see them create both a browser and and OS that aim to help people do this things much faster. Both of which serve its vision and its business model.

It’s very difficult to displace a competitor who bets their reputation on an attribute you have to catch up to. According to some tests, Firefox 8 is just as fast as Chrome. And so is Internet Explorer and Opera (some tests indicate IE9 and Opera are the fastest browsers). The problem here is, everybody associates Chrome with speed. And speed, in internet time, is the killer feature.

Competition is great because it forces companies to innovate. No doubt Chrome has been great for the internet and its users because it forced other browsers to adapt and offer the same benefits. And just like IE has seen its dominant position evaporate because they stopped innovating, Firefox is in the same position. Google innovated the browser in a different dimension and made it matter to people, and now they’re riding this advantage.

If you’ve been using Chrome for the last two years you can see that it has adopted some of the features of Firefox and Opera while still keeping the browser blazing fast. This was expected as extending browser functionality was and industry standard. And it’s completely modified the browser wars. This just goes to show how fast things move on the web. And also just how fast your value proposition and the advantages you’ve built it on can become irrelevant in an instant.

There are other factors that played a role in helping Chrome catch up quickly such as Google’s large techie user base, its home screen and it’s marketing muscle. Not to mention the fact that Chrome actually did what it said it did. But there are few things worth pointing out for those of you who may be seeing red when there are blue areas you may be overlooking:

1. Being late doesn’t mean being irrelevant. Just like Apple didn’t invent the smartphone, Google didn’t invent the browser. They just saw the need to innovate in another dimension and made it matter to people. Now everyone is playing catch up.

2. Keep your users existing needs in check but look beyond them. I’m pretty sure users of Firefox and IE didn’t ask for a faster browser. Most likely people were thinking it’s all about their internet connection. How could they know or think that a browser could be much faster? They couldn’t!

3. Focus on what matters and make it relevant. So much of innovation is about focusing on an attribute or feature no one else is exploring.

Incumbents are more focused on extending their current feature set than on thinking beyond it. The question is: Will it matter to people? Does it make their life better? Does it improve on the industry standard?

17 Nov 11 Google unveils Chrome Web Store in PH

Internet behemoth Google has unveiled in the country the Chrome Web Store, a marketplace that gives users a place to browse and purchase apps on the Web, while at the same time giving developers a dedicated place to showcase their Web applications.

The tech firm noted that finding the best applications on the Web — like a great game of virtual basketball — can be a challenge because there has never been a dedicated place to search and browse for them.

“Now, with ratings, reviews and a user-friendly interface, the Chrome Web Store gives users an easy place to discover and purchase these web apps,” it said.

The Chrome Web Store includes several apps designed especially for Pinoys, created by local developers.

The list includes Pinoytuner and Terno Recordings apps for listening to and discovering local music. The My ABS-CBN app supplements the popular TV station, and the new PBA app keeps fans up to date with the latest basketball news.

There’s also Angry Birds and Battle Stations, as well the popular file storage app Box, photo editing tools like Pixlr, and the Google Docs suite.

The Chrome Web Store also offers extensions and themes to help users customize their Web browsing experience. Extensions are custom features and functionalities that one can add to Chrome.

Unlike apps, extensions like Pinoy Exchange — which allows users to check out the top discussions on the forum any time they’re online — are always available on any website. Themes change the appearance of the background of your Chrome browser to give it a personal touch.

In the Chrome Web Store, apps and extensions are presented in a wall of images that’s updated every time a user visits the store, so one can quickly scan the store and find interesting things to try out.

Apps and extensions are easy to install — just hover over an image and click “Add to Chrome.”

For Pinoy developers, the launch of the Chrome Web Store in the Philippines means they’ll be able to easily build and distribute their apps to the more than 200 million people around the world who already use Chrome.
